A series of deliberate subtractions is used to create a 15 unit apartment building in Portland, Oregon, that meets zoning requirements while creating a striking place to live.
First, the setbacks are subtracted from the allowable building zone, then the front and back of the site are carved out for parking and for existing large trees. The three story volume is then carved further to create terraces for the upper units, and a courtyard is created to shield from street noise from a major thoroughfare. Corners of the building are carefully crafted in plan to create dynamic spaces, and lastly, large openings are carved into the building at an angle to create entry porches and shade from the south and western sun.
